Air Fryer Steak Fajitas Recipe and Serving Ideas (1)

If you've cooked steak in an air fryer, then you know that the meat is charred on the outside and juicy on the inside. It's amazing! Cut into cubes before cooked, the meat is ready very quickly and there's more surface to caramelize.

That's why steak and mushroom bites are so popular. And, it's the inspiration for beef fajitas cooked in an air fryer too. Use taco seasoning, bell peppers, and onions to get the bold Mexican flavors the whole family will love.

You'll love this recipe because:

  • It's ready quickly! You don't need to marinate the meat. The rub locks in the flavor.
  • It's easy to customize with different vegetables!
  • It's keto-friendly and gluten-free depending upon how you serve it. And, we have some great low-carb ideas for that!

Note: We routinely make this recipe in both a 5.8 quart Cosori Air Fryer and a 4 quart Ninja Air Fryer. The exact process may differ depending upon your appliance. Use the guidance and tips we provide to make any necessary adjustments. Always follow the manufacturer instructions for your particular model.

Ingredients

Here's what you'll need to make the recipe:

  • Steak - We used top sirloin filets. It's leaner than top sirloin but either cut is recommended. The thick cubes make it easy to determine when the meat reaches the perfect internal temperature with a thermometer.
    • You'll also find top sirloin that has been cut into strips. It cooks very fast and the vegetables may need to finish separately.
    • Other cuts often used in fajitas are flank and skirt steaks. Adjust the cook time depending upon the thickness of the meat.
    • No matter what type of beef you use, cut it into similar-sized pieces so that it cooks evenly.
  • Onion and Bell Peppers - cut into strips or diced.
    • Depending upon your air fryer basked, smaller pieces may fall through the grates if it's not lined.
  • Fajita seasoning - store bought or make the DIY blend below.
  • Lime - to squeeze over the top just before serving.

Customize the Vegetables

Mushrooms, cauliflower, broccoli, and grape tomatoes are all great in steak fajitas too. Chop everything into small pieces so it will cook in the short time frame or be prepared to remove the meat and cook the veggies a little longer.

The air fryer basket is already pretty full. Take that into consideration it you decide to load it up with extra veggies. You may need to shake the basket an extra time and add a few minutes to the total cook time.

Low-Carb Fajita Seasoning

This is our go-to blend of fajita seasoning. When you make your own blend, you can easily make adjustments. If you want more heat, add extra cayenne pepper. Use a sugar substitute or leave it out to keep it keto.

Mix the following spices together in a small bowl. The yield is about 1 ½ Tablespoons.

  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon oregano
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon sugar substitute (optional)

Preheat the air fryer to 390 °F so it's sizzling hot when you place the meat and vegetables inside. You can line the basket with parchment paper or foil if desired. These don't make much of a mess!

  1. Pat meat dry, cut into cubes, and combine with olive oil and fajita seasoning.
  2. Slice vegetables. Add beef cubes and vegetables to the air fryer. Gently shake to distribute the meat and veggies. Some of the oil and seasoning will coat the peppers and onions, which is a good thing. If you feel like that does not happen, then spritz the vegetables with a little more olive oil.
  3. Set air fryer to 390 °F and cook for about 9 minutes in total, shaking half way through. The exact time will vary depending upon your model and how full it is.
    • Note: Lift a piece of meat out of the air fryer and use an instant read thermometer to determine the exact internal temperature. The USDA recommends that beef be cooked to 145 °F. The internal temperature will continue to rise after the meat is done cooking. For a warm, pink center, remove at 130 °F to 135 °F.
  4. Remove steak from the basket and allow it to rest for a few minutes so that the juices are distributed. Slice steak against the grain into bite-sized strips. Squeeze lime juice over the top and enjoy!

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 pound top sirloin filets or top sirloin cut into 1 ½ to 2 inch cubes
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 Tablespoon Fajita Seasoning
  • ½ cup sliced bell pepper
  • ½ cup sliced onion
  • 1 lime for serving

Low-Carb Fajita Seasoning

  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon oregano
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon Stevia Blend
  • teaspoon cayenne pepper or to taste!

Instructions

  • Preheat empty air fryer with crisper plate or basket in place at 390 °F for 3 minutes.

  • Pat meat dry. While air fryer is heating up, toss beef cubes with olive oil and fajita seasoning.

  • Pour seasoned beef cubes, sliced bell peppers, and onions into the preheated air fryer and gently shake to combine.

Note: Some of the oil and seasoning will coat the peppers and onions, which is a good thing. If you feel like that does not happen, then spritz with a little more olive oil.

  • Set air fryer to 390 °F and cook for about 9 minutes in total.

After 3 minutes pass, pause and shake the basket. Do this again at 2-minute intervals until the beef cubes reach the desired doneness. The time will vary by machine and based upon the thickness of the cubes and how full the basket is.

The best way to determine if the meat is done is to pause and check it. Lift a piece out and test it with a meat thermometer or cut and peek in the middle to see the progress. The USDA recommends that beef be cooked to 145 °F. The internal temperature will continue to rise after the meat is done cooking. For a warm, pink center, remove at 130 °F to 135 °F.

  • Allow steak to rest a couple of minutes so the juices distribute before slicing against the grain into bite-sized pieces. Squeeze lime juice over the top.

  • Enjoy on tortillas, lettuce wraps, cauliflower rice, or in a salad with desired toppings.

Low Carb Fajita Seasoning

  • Mix spices together in a small bowl. The yield is about 1 ½ Tablespoons

Stovetop Directions - Follow the directions for preparing the beef cubes and vegetables. Heat 1 Tablespoon olive oil in a skillet (preferably cast iron) over high heat and then add beef cubes. Allow beef cubes to cook, untouched on each side for several minutes until they reach the desired doneness. Remove beef and slice after it rests for several minutes. Add vegetables to the pan and cook for 5-7 minutes until charred and softened.

This was very easy to do in the air fryer. I like rare beef so using larger chunks of meat worked well. Double up on the onion because it disappears and everyone wants it on their fajitas. Will make again.
