Summary

  • Early reaction to The Crow reimagining calls it "horrible" and "unwatchable."
  • Director of the original 1994 film, Alex Proyas, questions the idea of remaking The Crow and believes Brandon Lee's legacy should be respected.
  • The modern reimagining of The Crow, starring Bill Skarsgård and FKA Twigs, follows a revenge plot revolving around love and sacrifice.

The first reaction to this year’s reimagining of the Gothic superhero story, The Crow, has emerged...and things are not looking good. The reaction comes from Cliff Dorfman, the writer behind the likes of Warrior who was attached to the project for years before the studio decided to go in a different direction, who took to social media to declare that The Crow is nothing less than “unwatchable.”

"If hypothetically, one happened to see a screening of @TheCrow_Movie #thecrow which @Lionsgate is releasing in August, one might say, it’s horrible, it’s unwatchable, don’t waste your money, or can’t believe it’s so much worse than the original. It is. And don’t."

Ouch. Dorfman has since deleted his brief (and scathing) review of The Crow, and at the time even tagged the studio following an early screening of the movie. He quickly reconsidered, deleting his post. But the internet always keeps the receipts, and it sounds like he was very much not a fan of the comic book movie reimagining.

The Crow's Bill Skarsgård Voices Concern Over the Film's Ending

The Crow star Bill Skarsgård revealed he has a different preference for the film's ending.

This is far from the first criticism leveled at The Crow reimagining, with the filmmaker behind the 1994 original, Alex Proyas questioning the idea and believing that the story should be left alone as the late Brandon Lee’s legacy.

"I really don't get any joy from seeing negativity about any fellow filmmakers work. And I'm certain the cast and crew really had all good intentions, as we all do on any film. So it pains me to say any more on this topic, but I think the fan's response speaks volumes. THE CROW is not just a movie. Brandon Lee died making it, and it was finished as a testament to his lost brilliance and tragic loss. It is his legacy. That's how it should remain."
