The Dispatch from Moline, Illinois (2024)

a The Dispatch and The Rock Island Argus Monday, November 12, 2001 Nation World Obituaries Bin Laden: 'America can't get me alive' Osama bin Laden said he had nothing to do with the anthrax attacks in the United States, and declared he would never allow himself to be captured, in the second part of a newspaper interview published Sunday. "America can't get me alive," bin Laden was quoted as saying. "I can be eliminated, but not my Bin Laden granted 1 the inter view Wednesday to Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir, who said he was blindfolded and ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) Osama bin Laden bundled into a jeep in the Afghan capital, Kabul. He said he was driven five hours to a cold, mud hut where he spoke with bin Laden for two hours. It was impossible to independently verify Mir's account of the interview.

Mir's newspaper, Ausaf, published part of the interview Saturday and included additional excerpts Sunday. Mir, who has written a biography of bin Laden that will be published soon, said the terror suspect declined to answer many of his questions. When Mir asked if bin Laden was responsible for the anthrax attacks, he laughed and said: "We don't know anything about anthrax." Bin Laden did claim in the portion of the interview published Saturday that his al-Qaida organization had nuclear and chemical weapons and would use them if the United States employed such weapons on him. Mir wrote that when he asked bin Laden where he allegedly got the mass destruction weapons, bin Laden replied: "Go to the next question." The United States says it has no evidence that bin Laden possesses nuclear weapons. Intelligence experts believe al-Qaida has experimented with crude chemical weapons at a training camp in Afghanistan.

FBI officials say there is no direct link between anthrax attacks in the United States and any cell or network, including al-Qaida. Mir said bin Laden vowed that if his Taliban allies lose Kabul and other cities, "we will move to the mountains. We will continue our guerrilla warfare against the Americans." Study: Cho Cholesterol-lowering drugs less effective than stated ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Two-thirds of people, taking widely prescribed cholesterollowering medicines do not get as much benefit as drug company statements suggest they should, a study found. Although the reasons for this are not entirely clear, researchers suspect a simple answer: Patients do not take their pills as diligently as they should.

"It's extremely difficult to get people to do anything on a routine basis," said lead investigator Dr. Dennis L. Sprecher, whether it's taking pills, eating healthier food or getting more exercise. The benefits of the pills, known as statins, have been proven in large studies. Sprecher and colleagues at the Cleveland Clinic set out to learn whether they work as well in ordinary practice as they do in those formal experiments.

He presented his results Sun- day at the opening of the American Heart Association's annual scientific meeting in Anaheim. They were based on a follow-up of 375 patients who began statin treatment at the Cleveland Clinic. The doctors checked whether the prescriptions had lowered the patients' levels of LDL, the bad kind of cholesterol that increases the risk of heart trouble. After one follow-up, they found 66 percent benefitted less than would be predicted by the so-called "package insert," the instructions for doctors that are written by drug makers and approved and edited by the Food and Drug Administration Eighteen percent of patients showed no change in their LDL levels or had even worse readings than when they started. Sprecher also said there is no biological reason to suspect that the drugs fail to lower cholesterol if taken properly.

Review: Bush narrowly ahead in some categories, Gore others By Robert Tanner and Sharon Crenson AP National Writers A vote-by-vote review of untallied ballots in the 2000 Florida presidential election indicates George W. Bush would have narrowly prevailed in the partial recounts sought by Al Gore, but Gore might have reversed the outcome by the barest of margins had he pursued and gained a complete statewide recount. Bush eventually won Florida, and thus the White House, by 537 votes out of more than 6 million cast. But questions about the uncounted votes lingered. Almost a year after that cliffhanger conclusion, a mediasponsored review of the more than 175,000 disputed ballots underscored that the prize of the U.S.

presidency came down to an almost unimaginably small number of votes. The new data, compiled by The Associated Press and seven other news organizations, also suggested that Gore followed a legal strategy after Election Day that would have led to his defeat even if it had not been rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court. Gore sought a recount of a relatively small portion of the state's disputed ballots while the review indicates his only chance lay in a course he advocated publicly but did not pursue in court a full statewide recount of all Florida's untallied votes. "We are a nation of laws and the presidential election of 2000 is over," Gore said Sunday in a prepared statement.

"Right now, our country faces great challenge we seek to successfully combat terrorism. I fully support President Bush's efforts to achieve that goal. Said Bush press secretary Ari Fleischer: "The election was settled a year ago, President Bush won and the voters have long since moved on." BE PART OF THE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS TOUR!
